Packing may seem overwhelming at first, but with careful planning, it can be quick and easy. Putting in extra effort during packing can make unpacking a breeze – no more fights on which box the dinner plates were placed in! Take note of these 5 tips to help you pack smarter and keep you sane during the big move.
Get your boxes ahead of time
First things first, make sure you have your packing supplies in order. The last thing you need is to be dumpster diving for boxes. Try your best to steer clear of extra-large boxes as they are oftentimes too heavy to carry and bulky for storage. If you are using large boxes, place lighter items like clothing and sheets in those boxes. Place small heavy items like books and home decor in small boxes. It’s also important to not overly rely on small boxes because that will mean you need to be coming in and out to place them in your vehicle fairly often.
Label each box with the room and content
Set out your boxes in each room and label them with their general contents before you start filling. Try to keep items together to avoid any confusion. This way, you can easily find out which boxes goes where in your new place and your boxes will not contain random bits of everything causing trouble when it’s time to unpack.
Securely seal your packages
It’s easy to assume your boxes won’t fall over or bust open during a quick walk from your home to the car or vice versa, but the truth is accidents happen. Make sure your boxes are not weak and damaged (if used boxes), and tape them closed several times over on the top and bottom.
Have a tool box
We don’t mean a traditional tool box – we mean a box for the tools used to reassemble the pieces you are moving (ex. Ikea’s everything tool). Having your moving tool box, can help you to pack up your items that need to be unassembled, and help you reassemble when you’re ready to settle in without the hassle of digging around for what you need. After all, the last thing you want to do on moving day is waste time.
Have an essentials box
“Rome wasn’t built in a day,” applies here. Moving isn’t usually a one-day event, so make sure you have some clothes, wash items, and basic necessities packed aside so you can have them when you have made it to your new home. This will keep you from trying to find a little bit of everything in your boxes and making a mess. For more packing and moving tips, visit one of our self-storage locations near you and speak to our on-site experts.
